CHEF LUCIANO DELSIGNORE

In 1955, the DelSignore family embarked on a new chapter in their lives, immigrating to the United States from eastern Italy and bringing with them a love for true Italian cuisine. What began with a small Italian-style diner in Livonia, Michigan has transformed into a family tradition of excellence with the acclaimed Bacco Ristorante and Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina restaurants, as well as the highly-anticipated Pernoi, a collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Takashi Yagihashi, opening in late summer of 2019.

As a first generation citizen of the United States, Luciano possesses strong ties to the Italian region of Abruzzo, just east of Rome, and still maintains a family home there. He has become one of metro Detroit’s most renowned chefs, winning numerous “Restaurant of the Year” and “Best Chef” awards and receiving multiple nominations from the James Beard Foundation.

CHEF JAMES RIGATO

As an advocate for all things Michigan, James Rigato is a leader in Detroit’s culinary scene renaissance. Rigato opened Mabel Gray in a small Coney-style diner on an abandoned stretch of Hazel Park’s main street in 2015. His sophisticated yet approachable menu aims to delight and nurture guests. His tireless work has not gone unnoticed: Mabel Gray earned one of James Beard’s “Best New Restaurant” semi-finalists and Eater’s “21 Best New Restaurants in America,” and the Detroit Free Press “Restaurant of the Year.” Rigato himself was three times a James Beard “Best Chef: Great Lakes” semi-finalist; a Top Chef season 12 contestant; and was named “The People’s Best New Chef: Great Lakes Region” by Food & Wine.

MARK KURLYANDCHIK – RESTAURANT CRITIC | DETROIT FREE PRESS

There’s no contest: Mark Kurlyandchik has the best job at the Detroit Free Press, where he’s been the restaurant critic and dining reporter since February 2016. In addition to writing reviews and other stories on metro Detroit’s dynamic dining scene, Kurlyandchik is also a documentary filmmaker. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Wayne State University and a documentary-focused master’s of journalism degree from the UC-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Though born in the former Soviet Union, he’s spent most of his life in metro Detroit.
